The Wooburn Singers
Greg Beardsell - Music Director
Simon Howat - Accompanist
Wooburn Singers extend an invitation to all choral singers to join them for a workshop day with their Music Director Greg Beardsell. They will be working on Karl Jenkins' The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace. This work was commissioned by the Royal Armouries and premiered in 2000, since when it has been performed by many choirs around the country.
The day starts at 10 am, and runs (with breaks) to 5 pm. At 5:30 they will run through the work one last time in performance conditions; friends or family may come and hear the performance without charge. The day will conclude by 7 pm.
Wooburn Singers was founded in 1967 by the late Richard Hickox and has earned a fine reputation as one of the UK's best amateur mixed voice choirs. Recording credits include Berlioz's Te Deum under Abbado, Langlais's Salve Regina and Burgon's Requiem, and a compilation of Music for the Last Night of the Proms with the RPO and Sir Charles Groves. Wooburn Singers has sung in London's major concert halls and in other European cities including Krakow, Venice, Paris, Prague, Geneva and Barcelona.
One of the finest choral conductors of his generation, Greg Beardsell is Musical Director of the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus, the Wooburn Singers and the Irish Youth Choir, Artistic Director of the Ulster Youth Choir and Associate Musical Director of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain.
Born in Harrogate and educated at Chetham's School of Music and Manchester University, Greg studied conducting with Michael Brewer and Gary Walker. Whilst at university, he held the directorship of the Chamber Choir, Ad Solem, for four years and conducted the Chamber Orchestra and the Symphony Chorus.
Greg's previous posts also include Music Director of the Oxford Chamber Choir and until recently the Surrey Youth Choir, whom he led to the Grand Finals of the Sainsbury's Choir of the Year. He was also the director of Opera Works, a company giving performance opportunities to young opera singers. In 2005, he was the recipient of the BBC Singers conductor bursary.
A large proportion of Greg's time is devoted to tutoring on singing and choral courses including the Eton Choral Courses, the IAPS Choral Course and Harrogate Choral Week. He regularly leads workshops for children around the country on behalf of the National Youth Choir and the Association of British Choral Directors. Greg is also in demand as an adjudicator and has adjudicated at the Choral Festivals in Navan, Bangor, Sligo and the International Championship of Collegiate a Cappella in Oxford.
As a Chorus Master as well as his work with BSC he has worked with the St. Endellion Festival Chorus, the BBC Symphony Chorus, the Bach Choir and the London Symphony Chorus and prepared works for conductors such as Marin Alsop and Richard Hickox. He has also directed the Sagittarian Consort of Cambridge, the Classical Soloists, the City of London Sinfonia and the BBC Singers
